Thailand Tourist Police Warn Travelers of Six Common Travel-Scam Traps This Halloween

BANGKOK, October 31, 2026 — As Halloween celebrations take place across Thailand, the Tourist Police Bureau is reminding both international and domestic travelers to stay alert to common travel scams that can turn a holiday into an unexpected problem.

As part of its public-awareness campaign, the Tourist Police has highlighted “Six Phantoms of Travel Scams” — six common situations that travelers should watch out for when using transportation, visiting attractions, renting recreational equipment, dining, enjoying nightlife, or making high-value purchases.

Pol.Lt. Gen.Phongsiam Meekhanthong, Commissioner of the Tourist Police, encouraged travelers to enjoy Thailand safely by planning their trips in advance, checking information through official channels, and confirming prices and service conditions before making a purchase or entering into an agreement.

The Six Phantoms of Travel Scams

  1. The Transportation Phantom — Unclear Fares and Routes

Before using a taxi, tuk-tuk or other transportation service, confirm the fare, make sure the meter is being used where applicable, and clearly agree on the destination and route before starting the journey.

  1. The “Closed Attraction” Phantom — Unexpected Detours

If someone tells you that a popular tourist attraction is closed and offers to take you somewhere else, do not rely solely on that information. Check the attraction’s official website, social-media channels or other official sources before changing your plans.

  1. The Rental Phantom — Jet Ski and Boat Disputes

Before renting a jet ski or boat, carefully read the rental agreement and inspect the equipment with the provider. Take clear photographs or videos of its condition before use. When returning the equipment, conduct a joint inspection with the provider and keep records of the transaction.

  1. The Price Phantom — Overcharging and Hidden Service Fees

Always check prices and service conditions before ordering, particularly at establishments without clearly displayed menus or price lists. Before making payment, check the receipt carefully and ask about any unclear charges.

  1. The Nightlife Phantom — Unexpected Entertainment Bills

Before entering a nightlife or entertainment venue, ask about admission fees, drink prices and any additional service charges. Make sure you understand the pricing before ordering.

  1. The Gem & Tailor Phantom — High-Value Purchase Traps

For expensive purchases such as gems, jewelry or tailored products, check the reputation and credibility of the shop, carefully review product details and certification documents, and understand the store’s return or refund policy before making a purchase. Avoid making high-value decisions under pressure or simply because of an unsolicited recommendation.

A Simple Rule: Check Before You Pay

The Tourist Police encourage travelers to follow one simple principle: “Check first, pay later.”

Taking a few moments to verify prices, service conditions, business information and official announcements can help prevent misunderstandings and protect travelers from potential scams.
